July 2010

Written by Eli Daconto

4th of July

On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country.  Here are some fun facts about Independence Day:

  • 2.5 Million - In July 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation.
  • 309.6 Million - The nations estimated population on this July Fourth.

Recital News

Our 2010 yearly recital was awesome. This was my first JF Music recital and I couldn’t believe the size of the production. It was amazing!  The students did a fantastic job. All of you should pat yourselves on the back. We look forward to next years 2011 recital. You can purchase pictures of the recital at

New Teacher Announcement

We would like to welcome Lori Daconto to the Jonathan Fletcher Music family. She teaches piano and has over 30 years of performance experience and over 10 years of teaching experience. We are very pleased to add her to our staff of excellent teachers.

Smyrna Summer Strings Program is going strong!!

The atmosphere of a rehearsal with the Smyrna Summer String Program is buoyant and lively.  The students are working hard and having fun with music that ranges from classical to rock.  Each student has put in creative ideas to enhance the final concert for which they are preparing and they are making new friends in the process.

Under the direction of Allison Franklin, the students are learning about life and etiquette as a symphony player and being coached every week in technique and musicianship.  In mid-July, the students will be joined by professional string players from across Middle Tennessee for a day of coaching and creative partnership.  The Smyrna Summer Strings Program is currently rehearsing every Friday afternoon in Smyrna.  Stay tuned for information about the upcoming concert!

Summer Rock Camp

This year’s summer rock camp is going very well.  The students have already split up into two bands.  They are going to be writing and recording their own songs this year in addition to choosing cover songs.  It’s very exciting to be working with such talented kids.  Next month we will have a one-on –one interview with Joe Dionne, one of the rock camp band leaders.  We will be discussing the writing and atmosphere of his band.  So stay tuned!!!
