November 2008

Kids today, despite the popular stereotypes, are far from lazy. They are overachievers in the true sense of the word. Day after day, they go to school, participate in sports, manage their complicated social lives, master the technology of cell phones and video games, do homework, and plan for their future and still manage to go to bed by 10:00. Some even want more. They want to play music. What makes these kids sacrifice what little time they have in order to play an instrument? You could say that it’s because they recognize the benefits music lessons provide to their memory and reasoning skills, but that’s not it. You might say that they want to alleviate the financial burden of college by winning a scholarship, but that’s not it. Is it because they want to be seen as ‘cool’? Perhaps, but I don’t think that’s why they play. I think they play because they have to. They are drawn to music. They are compelled to play. Music is inside them, and they need to get it out. It is an art, a part of their soul that demands to be recognized. It is who they are. If you have a child who is interested in music lessons, please do what you can do to help them. You are making an investment not only in their future, but also in their identity.
