January 2009

It’s the year 2009! Sounds kinda futuristic, doesn’t it? Well, the future is now. While I’m rather disappointed that we don’t yet have our flying cars, I am excited about the amazing technological advances in the world of music production and performance.

When Adolph Rickenbacker manufactured his fist electric guitar in the early 1930's, he never imagined how his invention would evolve over the years. Today’s electric guitars are nothing short of amazing by comparison. Consider the Schecter PT Fastback, which features Duncan designed pickups, Grover tuners, coil tap, and Diamond Hardtail bridge. The precision and quality of this instrument is truly remarkable. Mr. Rickenbacker would be proud.

There once was a time when guitars sounded like, well, guitars. These days guitarists have a plethora of sonic flavors to choose from. Just check out the Digitech line of effects pedals. From single effect foot pedals like the Synth Wah and DigiDelay to Multi Effects units like the RP350, these little boxes can turn your guitar sound into the science fiction soundscape you would expect in the 21st century.

How about recording? Thomas Edison brought us the first recorder back in 1877. It used a wax cylinder and a needle to record and play back sounds. Man, how things have changed. Today, we are digital. Check out the Samson C01U USB Microphone. At just over $100, you can use your home computer to record your own epic theme album with a quality that rivals the big studios. It definitely sounds better than wax.

So what does the 22nd century hold for us? Neural brainwave recorders? Thought processors? I just want my flying car….
