February 2009

Happy February. While it may be the shortest month of the year, it is also historically quite significant in the world of music. Check it out:

  • Feb. 1, 1963 Neil Young, at the age of 17, performs his first gig at a country club in Winnipeg.
  • Feb. 2, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper made their last ever appearance at Surf    Ballroom, Clearlake, Iowa.
  • Feb. 3 1961 Bob Dylan made his first ever recording in New York.
  • Feb. 4 1970 John Lennon and Yoko Ono donated their hair for an auction to aid the Black Power movement.
  • Feb. 5 1977 Iggy Pop signs a contract with RCA.
  • Feb. 6 1990 Billy Idol broke several bones in a major motorcycle accident, and as a result could not be in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors” movie.
  • Feb 7 1979 Stephen Stills became the first rock performer to record on digital equipment.
  • Feb 8 1969 George Harrison’s tonsils were removed, and then destroyed so they could not be sold.

The list goes on.  February is short, but absolutely historic.

2009 Recital

The 2009 Jonathan Fletcher Music Summer Recital will be held on Saturday, May 16th at Patterson Park Community Theater. We are very excited about this year’s event, and can’t wait to see our students showcase their talents. Over the years, our recital has grown from a small showcase at the local town center to an elaborate presentation with a big stage, sound system and lights. We have many new ideas and surprises planned for this year’s event, and we expect this will be the biggest and best yet. As a student, you should begin discussing with your teacher your role in the upcoming show, and keep your eye on this section of the newsletter for future updates and details.

We Need Your Help

Have you been to the new and improved Jonathan Fletcher Music website? If not, check it out. There you will find all sorts of info and specials designed to make your experience with our store a more enjoyable one. Here’s where you come in. We need reviews of products you’ve bought at our store. We want to set up a base of knowledge of our products written not only by us, the salesmen, but by you, the end user. Your opinion matters the most. So the next time you’re in the market for a guitar amp, bass amp, or keyboard, log on to  and see what other musicians are buying and loving (or not loving). No pressure, just the truth.

"Nothing separates the generations more than music. By the time a child is eight or nine, he    has developed a passion for his own music that is even stronger than his passions for procrastination and weird clothes." Bill Cosby
